The challenge
A marketplace that slows down as catalogues grow isn't inconvenient — it's abandoned. Where do you spend engineering effort so discovery stays fast under real load?
What we built
Profiling showed the latency concentrated in a handful of hot query paths, not spread evenly — so the work was finding them: query restructuring and indexing over scaling hardware, caching on the read paths that dominate discovery traffic, and a widened brand-to-retailer connection model so more matches were possible in the first place. React/TypeScript frontends with role-based dashboards and real-time notifications completed the product.
Key engineering
The decisions that made it work
Profile first, then fix
The permanent fix at zero recurring cost, where scaling up would have been a monthly bill hiding the same problem.
Caching where it earns its keep
Read paths only — caching writes would have bought little and added the class of bug that costs marketplace trust.
The results
What actually changed
- 1
Database load down 45% from indexing and query restructuring — no bigger instance required
- 2
Peak API latency down 35% on the endpoints buyers hit most
- 3
The one project in this list anyone can open and verify unaided — it is live
What it doesn't do
This predates our AI work; it is here as full-stack evidence. The product has continued to evolve since — the live site reflects work beyond ours.
